Mach1 - Rugged PoS Device
Background
It is hard to imagine today’s world without consumer products and Devices. They are ubiquitous in everybody’s life. Devices like mobile devices, entertainment devices, IoT devices for home automation, etc. are considered by far the closest gadgets to the users. So it is very important to design these devices to cater to a wide range of demographics.
Project Scope
We designed and developed the complete mechanicals for the product including Conceptualization, Detailed engineering, Development of Prototypes, Design Validation, Manufacturing Drawings Release, and Development of Parts. Designed to be used as a portable device in a rural environment, the product has been given a rugged form using strong and durable materials to withstand accidental abrasions. The user interface has been designed to meet the user needs that primarily include the aspects of understanding and operating the device. There have been certain functional additions made to the form to enhance the ease of use such as a standing structure to support the object on surfaces.
Product Features
Mach1 (Multi Authentication Cellular Handset) is a platform device that could be used in many ways than one.
It could be used as a Rural ATM, a PoS Device, or a Communication Device. The product has been designed specifically for usage in the aerospace industry. Fully ruggedized to operate in harsh field environments. The Android based device is compliant with Government of India Micro-ATM 1.5.1 Standards formulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It has among many features, a 7″ display with high usability for the semi-literate, a 2″ Thermal Printer, dual SIM slots, GPRS & 3G support, a Fingerprint Scanner Magnetic Swipe Card, Smartcard Chip Readers/Writers, and a user-swappable battery.
Highlights
While decent aesthetics were rendered to the product, iSol ensured that the device was rugged to be used in a rural environment. The corner protection caps were designed to protect the device from an accidental drop. A simple color palette comprising white, gray, and black hues was proposed to give it a formal yet rugged look, keeping both usability and functionality in mind. The product was designed and engineered around an android tablet motherboard and the additional hardware that was built to offer all the user application features. iSol successfully developed all the injection molded plastic parts, about 22 of them, with an overseas supplier of BeWo’s choice.
As part of the Design validation, iSol also carried out FE Simulation for drop and confirmed the product would be safe upon accidental drop from 3 feet to the ground.
